Saints' Benjamin Watson cites Hebrews 13:3, asks for prayer for Nigeria

More than 6,000 Nigerian Christians — women and children included — have been murdered this summer by “armed Fulani herdsmen,” according to The Christian Post.

New Orleans Saints tight end Benjamin Watson is calling other Christians to join him in prayer for those victims.

“Pure genocide,” he wrote on Twitter this week. “Lord, lead us as we seek to support our persecuted brothers and sisters.”

Watson, who has regularly shared his Christian beliefs and applied Biblical teachings to his commentary on America, also mentioned Hebrews 13:3 in his call for prayer: “Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.”

One of the NFL’s consistent voices on social activism and faith-based service, Watson has also retweeted dozens of fans’ prayers in response to his request. Originally a first-round draft pick in 2004, he’s entering his 15th season as a pro, having spent time with four different teams: the Saints, New England Patriots, Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens. A Super Bowl champion with the Pats, he’s also well known for his charity work, just this week providing equipment to a pregnancy center.
