Daily Devotional: Tuesday, October 21 – Who Am I?

“My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” — Galatians 2:20 (NLT)

There are some phone calls that are unforgettable. I still remember when my wife called me to let me know she was going into labor with our first child. And I still remember a phone call I had with a former NFL player, though it was a scary call.

He had been a star since he was playing Pop Warner youth football. He was one of the most highly recruited players in America out of high school. On Saturdays, he regularly played in front of nearly 100,000 fans. He made it to the NFL, played before a worldwide audience, and signed a big contract. But like all athletes, his career eventually came to an end. And now he was in a very dark place.

Like many of us, he tied who he was to what he did. His identity was in football and when his career came to an end, he didn’t know who he was. Every athlete’s and coach’s career will come to an end one day. How do you answer the question, “Who am I?”

I reminded this former NFL player of Galatians 2:20 (above), which says we find our identity in Christ. Who we are is based on who we are in Him, not on what we do. In Christ, we are children of God (1 John 3:1), no longer slaves to sin (Romans 6:6), and forgiven (Ephesians 1:7).

Where do you find your identity? How can you remind yourself of who you are in Christ?
