Kyle Larson was the top NASCAR Cup Series driver for the 2025 season. Even though Denny Hamlin had more wins and Chase Elliot was voted the most popular driver, Larson was the most consistent driver last year. He won three races, finished in the top five in 15 races, and in 22 contests he placed in the top 10. He ended the season with 5,034 points.

Whenever Larson didn’t win, he didn’t pout or get discouraged. He prepared for the next race.

Racing is a picture of life with the ups and downs, the challenges, the wins, the losses, the car wrecks, flat tires and arguments between the pit crew and driver. Life isn’t always easy and we don’t win every time. We need determination and courage to shake off our disappointments when things don’t go well because of our mistakes, wrongdoing or circumstances beyond our control. This mindset of learning from losses, but not dwelling on them, is essential for success in school, the workplace, family life and the Christian life.

When Joshua led the Israelites as a military general, he would have wanted to win every battle, though probably realized some setbacks could happen before they received the Promised Land. After a big victory at Jericho, Joshua didn’t send enough soldiers to fight in the next battle. Suddenly, Israel suffered a shocking loss (Joshua 7:4-5).

Joshua blamed God for the loss rather than admitting his own overconfidence. He was also unaware of the greed of a man named Achan in his army who plundered the enemy in disobedience to God’s command (Joshua 7). Everybody suffered because of Achan’s selfishness, but God didn’t want the Israelites to quit because of one loss. He wanted them to admit their wrongs, seek forgiveness, learn to do better, and go forward for another win. Since God is patient, he reassured Joshua and the people after they dealt properly with their sin.

As the next chapter began, God spoke to the Israelites as if yesterday didn’t happen. “Then the Lord said to Joshua, ‘Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Take the whole army with you, and go up and attack Ai. For I have delivered into your hands the king of Ai, his people, his city and his land'” (Joshua 8:1).

Everything happened exactly as God said it would. This Old Testament story was a preview of the great victory Jesus won for us when He rose from the dead. We’re always winners through Him, no matter what happens.
