“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God…” — Ephesians 2:8

Grace Hill is an outside hitter and team captain for Texas Southern University’s volleyball team. Even though she had an illustrious high school volleyball career and played club volleyball, Grace wasn’t heavily recruited. So she decided to walk on at her parents’ alma mater, TSU.
She played extremely well her freshman year and finished fourth on the team in kills. In her sophomore year, she led the team in kills and was second in digs. At the end of that season, she was awarded a scholarship. The former walk-on had earned a scholarship for all of her hard work and dedication. At the beginning of her junior year, she was named team captain.
So many people think that going to Heaven works the same way. Some believe God gives everyone a chance to walk on, work hard and try to earn Heaven. They believe they can earn forgiveness with God by working hard.
Ephesians 2:8-10 clearly tells us that we are made right with God by grace through faith in Christ alone. We can’t earn it or work for it. No amount of dedication can earn us Heaven.
So the question today is: Do you see yourself as a walk-on trying to earn a scholarship with God? Because of your sin, you have been cut off from Him, but by placing your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, you can receive His free gift of eternal life.
