SS PODCAST: Rays pitcher David Hess on his 2021 cancer diagnosis, returning to baseball

THIS IS THE SPORTS SPECTRUM PODCAST
WITH JASON ROMANO, FEATURING DAVID HESS

David Hess is a pro baseball pitcher with the Tampa Bay Rays organization. He was selected in the fifth round of the 2014 MLB Amateur Draft by the Baltimore Orioles and made his major league debut in 2018. After three seasons with the Orioles, he pitched in 2021 with the Marlins and Rays.

In October 2021, Hess was diagnosed with cancer after tests revealed a cantaloupe-sized tumor pressing on his heart and lungs. Following months of chemo, Hess was told by doctors in January that he is cured and could resume baseball activities. He joined the Rays at spring training in March.

Today on the podcast, we talk to Hess about his cancer diagnosis, trusting in God upon hearing the news, the role his wife played in his recovery, and his desire to pitch in a baseball game very soon.
