THIS IS THE SPORTS SPECTRUM PODCAST
WITH JASON ROMANO, FEATURING MARK APPEL
Mark Appel was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 MLB Draft by the Houston Astros. In 2015, he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies, but in 2018 at the age of 26, he stepped away from baseball.
After three years, he announced he was making a comeback to chase his MLB dream and return to pitch professionally. He appeared in 23 games with the Phillies’ Double- and Triple-A affiliates in 2021, striking out 60 batters in 71.1 innings pitched. In 2022, his dream was realized as he made his MLB debut in June with the Phillies. In all, he appeared in six games, allowing two earned runs in 10.1 innings.
Today on the podcast, we talk to Mark Appel about achieving his MLB dream, remaining patient with God’s plan, and why he’s building himself a super-van to drive around the country in.

Philadelphia, PAAt 30 years old, I made my MLB debut.
When I stood on that mound in Citizens Bank Park last Wednesday, I looked around the stadium taking in this once in a lifetime moment.
And that’s all it was… just a moment.
