Freshman CJ Jimcoily takes time in LSU ‘Talent Show’ to preach to teammates: ‘Obey His commands’

The 2025 college football season will kick off in full force this Labor Day Weekend, headlined by a slate of intriguing matchups. One of the most anticipated games has been coined “The Battle for Death Valley” as the No. 4-ranked Clemson Tigers host the No. 9-ranked LSU Tigers.

Almost every college football pundit has weighed in with their thoughts on the top-10 showdown and its possible College Football Playoff ramifications, but the pressure of big-time college football hasn’t seemed to faze LSU freshman safety CJ Jimcoily or his fellow freshman teammates.

To add a bit of levity to the team’s preparations for its massive opening game, the LSU football program held what was termed the “Rookie Talent Show” last week. Amidst the more lighthearted talents, Jimcoily took the opportunity to do what was most important — point his teammates away from himself and to the One they truly need to know.

“The Father said, ‘If you love Me, you’ll obey My commands.’ Do you hear this or do you listen to this?” Jimcoily asked during a short sermon directed to his entire team. “The Father says again, ‘May I say it so you may hear it and listen.’ Obey His commands.

“See, we like to cling onto the [verse] ‘A weapon formed against you shall not prosper.’ We cling onto that and hear that. But are you truly listening? Because it is also said, ‘Do not engage in any form of sexual immorality.’ You’re laughing, but this is the truth. It is also said to love the Father above all things. To seek first Him and His what? To seek first Him and His righteousness.”

Jimcoily didn’t let occasional snickers deter him from being obedient to his Heavenly Father and calling the team to turn toward Jesus and away from the world.

He concluded his time by asking his teammates to visualize themselves in a field with Jesus on one side, the pleasures of the world on the other, and a fence in the middle. The temptation is to sit on the fence and “play both sides,” but in reality, he said, Satan owns the fence.

Jimcoily’s incredible boldness in Christ is impressive considering he’s a freshman who hasn’t yet played a down of college football. He reveals a similar boldness in his Instagram bio, where he quotes part of the Bible verse 1 Corinthians 10:31 and declares, “Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound defensive back was a consensus four-star prospect out of Lipscomb Academy, a private Christian prep school in Jimcoily’s hometown of Nashville, where he also excelled in the classroom and possessed a GPA higher than a 4.0. Jimcoily is not expected to start for LSU against Clemson, but due to his size and versatility, hopes are high for him to blossom into a defensive star in Baton Rouge.

Kickoff between LSU and Clemson is set for Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
