“’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” — Jeremiah 29:11

Each sport has its fair share of games on the schedule. Everyone aims for the postseason, but there’s only one champion declared at the end. You’ll never hear about two winners tied at the Women’s College World Series; you’ll never celebrate a tie at the Super Bowl. No matter how many hours of film, preparation, training and studying go into your sport, there will come a day when one winner is crowned and the rest are shortly forgotten.
Don’t allow your performance on the field to determine the entire trajectory of your life. Remmington Hewitt of Oregon Softball leans on Jeremiah 29:11 (above) as a foundation that keeps her focused on the Lord, not the scoreboard. Win or lose on the field, she holds onto this powerful verse, trusting God’s plans for her future.
If you play sports, it’s a blessing, not a destiny. Don’t let your flesh get caught in the glitz and glamour. Have fun and embrace the journey, but don’t lose yourself along the way. Regardless of your accolades, blue check marks on social media, or NIL endorsements, God values you as His most-prized possession.
Sports may or may not be in your future, but find peace knowing God’s calling the shots. He will never equate your value to your win-loss record in a jersey. Play with your whole heart and glorify God during your limited time in between the lines.
How can you encourage your teammates to focus more on the Lord?
— Monique Tuiasosopo, Oregon Athletics chaplain
