Bengals rookie QB Payton Thorne trusting God as dad battles cancer: ‘Christ will be glorified in this’

Payton Thorne is busy battling for a spot on the Cincinnati Bengals’ roster in training camp, but there is something else on his mind too. The former Michigan State and Auburn quarterback’s dad, football coach Jeff Thorne, was diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer in February.

On July 19, Payton detailed Jeff’s situation in an Instagram post, saying the cancer had spread to a point where it was inoperable and asking anyone with “information or connections on alternative treatments or previous experience with a similar case” to reach out. The post has more than 20,000 likes and includes multiple references to the family’s strong faith in God.

“While our faith is fully in Him and His power, I believe it’s my duty here on earth to do all that I can to find resources and as much help as possible,” Payton wrote. “Then leave the rest to God. I have already received great direction from people close to me, which we’re very thankful for.”

Payton grew up in a Christian home and knew Jesus from an early age. He developed his own personal relationship with the Lord over time, which has helped guide him throughout his football journey. Amidst all the uncertainty with his dad’s health, Payton is confident in the story God is writing.

“Although there are many things up in the air right now. One thing is for certain: Christ will be glorified in this,” he said in the post. “There is a peace knowing we serve a God who has already defeated death. That’s not just some positivity talk, that’s truth.”

Jeff has also been vocal about his faith on social media. He declared that “God is GOOD!” in a July 18 post on X thanking everyone for the care he received at the Mayo Clinic even though the news wasn’t what he was hoping for.

The Bengals signed Payton in April as an undrafted free agent following his five-year college career. He started 26 games at Michigan State before transferring to Auburn for his final two years. He led the Spartans to an 11-2 record in his first season as a starter, throwing for 3,232 yards and 27 touchdowns. Payton finished his college career with 48 starts, 10,961 passing yards, 1,068 rushing yards and 97 total touchdowns.

He joined the “Built 4 More” podcast prior to April’s draft and reflected on the role his faith has played.

“It’s been a huge part of my life,” he said on the podcast. “I would not have gotten through my college career without it, the amount of times I prayed. … If you don’t have a firm foundation to rely on and fall back on, it’s really hard.”

Payton and the Bengals open the preseason against the defending Super Bowl-champion Philadelphia Eagles on Aug. 7. They face the Washington Commanders on Aug. 18 and the Indianapolis Colts on Aug. 23. Teams are required to cut their rosters to 53 players by Aug. 26.

Whatever happens next in Jeff’s and Payton’s stories, they want to use it as an opportunity to give glory to God.

“I’m working for the Lord and doing everything I can to glorify Him,” Payton said in a 2024 interview with Auburn’s athletics website. “I pray that I can maximize the gifts that He gave me and use them to the best of my ability and that He can use me to reach other people.”
