Summer 2024

The Game Plan

“But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.” Acts 20:24

In 1969, I took my first job after college as teacher and assistant basketball coach. It wasn’t a good sports year at my high school; varsity football and basketball both had losing seasons, and my junior varsity team was 8-10. At season’s end, however, we hosted the conference freshman-sophomore basketball tourney. Fortunately, I had three sophomores and two freshmen who were good players.

We won our first game, but halfway through the second, one of their players got hot and made several consecutive baskets. I substituted another skinny freshman who seemed to be improving on defense. He immediately began “belly button to belly button” defense on their hot shooter and shut him down! The kid was naturally sure-footed, very quick, and hustled for all he was worth. He became the crowd favorite of the tourney (which we won), and it was a real pleasure to watch him play defense.

Psalm 18:33 says, “He makes my feet like deer feet and sets me on high places.” Also, Isaiah 52:7 says, “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who proclaims peace, who brings glad tidings of good things, who proclaims salvation, who say to Zion, ‘Your God reigns!’” May we, like that skinny freshman, use our “supernatural” sure-footedness to bring joy to the One who made us, and proclaim His good news.
