Throwback Thursday: Jim Gills, September 1991

Jim who?

Don’t worry, we hadn’t heard of him either. But we could see why we needed to when we stumbled upon this 1991 Sports Spectrum article.

Both at the time of the article and in present day, Dr. Jim Gills has proved to be a true Rennaissance Man and Energizer Bunny, changing and influencing the fields of medicine and athletics for the better.

A world-renowned ocular surgeon (he even has a procedure named after him; go figure), Gills trained for and completed 27 marathons, 5 Ironmans, and 6 Double Ironmans. He now owns the Ironman franchise, in addition to publishing 27 books, helping build 2,500 churches, and chairing four medical boards.

Seriously, does the man even sleep?!

What’s inspiring is where Gills gets his energy: he credits his Creator.

“I HAD MANY PRESSURES IN THE EARLY YEARS OF MY PRACTICE . . . I STARTED READING THE BIBLE FOR HOURS AND HOURS. THE WORD IS WHERE YOU GET POWER. MY LIFE WAS COMPLETELY CHANGED.” -DR. JIM GILLS
