With 2022 coming to a close, Sports Spectrum is highlighting our most-viewed stories of the year.
Things didn’t look too promising for the Cincinnati Bengals in January’s AFC championship game when they found themselves down 21-3 to the favored Kansas City Chiefs. But they responded and actually took a 24-21 lead in the fourth quarter, before a last-second Chiefs field goal forced overtime.
Kansas City won the toss and received the first possession, but the Bengals defense intercepted Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Cincinnati QB Joe Burrow then led the Bengals offense right down the field to set up rookie kicker Evan McPherson for a 31-yard field goal. He drilled the kick to give the Bengals their first Super Bowl berth since 1988.
Game-winning kicks became somewhat routine for McPherson last season. The one against the Chiefs marked the fifth of his first pro season, including one the week before against the Tennessee Titans to reach the AFC title game.
Following those pressure-packed playoff kicks, McPherson met with the media while sporting a black shirt with “God is Good” printed across the chest. The postgame attire was a way of subtly sharing his faith, as he often also does on social media.
As the sports world discovered the Bengals had upset the Chiefs via McPherson’s game-winning kick to reach the Super Bowl, many fans found our story about his clutch kicks and the faith in God that drives him. It ranks No. 2 among our most-viewed stories in 2022:
