A star is being born this fall in Oxford, Mississippi.
Last year at this time, Trinidad Chambliss was operating in relative obscurity, quarterbacking Ferris State (Big Rapids, Michigan) to its third Division-II national championship in four years. After transferring to Ole Miss in May, and after being elevated to the starting QB role following an ankle injury to Austin Simmons in Week 2, Chambliss is taking the college football world by storm.

Chambliss has helped Ole Miss remain undefeated (5-0), and already with three conference wins, the Rebels have sole possession of first place in the SEC. The team’s most recent victory was a 24-19 home win on Saturday against LSU, who was previously undefeated and ranked No. 4 in the country.
Now, it’s Ole Miss who is ranked No. 4 and squarely in the College Football Playoff conversation.

“It’s like a dream come true,” Chambliss said Saturday in his postgame press conference. “… It’s an amazing accomplishment. Got to thank God for that one, He’s been with me the whole time. I’ve got to thank [head coach Lane Kiffin] — the whole staff here at Ole Miss — for giving me the opportunity to come here and showcase my skill set, showcase what I can do.”
Despite seeing limited action through the first two weeks, Chambliss has thrown for 1,033 yards with a 64.4% completion percentage and five touchdowns against only one interception. Always a threat on the ground as well as through the air, he’s also rushed for 266 yards and two touchdowns on 50 carries. Chambliss is the first SEC player in the past 30 years to accumulate 300 passing yards and 50 rushing yards in three consecutive games, and on Monday was named SEC Offensive Player of the Week and AP National Player of the Week after his performance against LSU.
Not bad for a quarterback who stands at 6-foot-1, weighs 200 pounds, and didn’t receive any Division-I scholarship offers coming out of Forest Hills Northern High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Looking to continue his football career, Chambliss enrolled at nearby Ferris State following high school. He impressed scouts enough with the Bulldogs to receive interest from larger programs, eventually landing at Ole Miss in the SEC. His first start with the Rebels came in Week 3 against conference-foe Arkansas, and any nerves Chambliss was battling certainly didn’t impact his play. He completed 21 of 29 passes for 353 yards and a touchdown, while also running for 62 yards and two more scores. The Rebels won, 41-35.
Despite suddenly bursting onto the national conscience, Chambliss hasn’t been shy about mentioning his faith in Christ.
“God’s got me. My Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was with me the whole time,” Chambliss said in his press conference following the game against Arkansas. Then, he cracked a smile. “But I was a little nervous.”

Ole Miss heads into a bye week, which comes at an opportune time as Kiffin now has a decision to make: Continue to roll with Chambliss, or reinstate Simmons as the starter once he’s fully healthy? Either way, Chambliss knows his Heavenly Father will be with him, ordering every step.
The Rebels’ next game comes at home against Washington State on Oct. 11 at 12:45 p.m. ET.
