Riley Unroe grew up with parents who loved the Lord, and so did he. That is, until the age of 17, when he was drafted to play professional baseball and began taking advantage of what the world had to offer. He still hung onto the label of being a Christian, but “faking it” became the only way he knew how to function. It took a toll on his soul. Finally, in a desperate moment, he asked a mentor for help, and was challenged to intentionally and intensely pray to God for six weeks. Before long, Riley felt “the strongest urge to return back to what I once was.” What followed was “the most liberating, unshackling freedom that I’ve ever felt in my entire life.”

We’re all in the middle of a story, and whether we admit it or not, we want our stories to matter. It’s those stories of deep and lasting impact that come to life when a person encounters Jesus, and responds to Him by faith. “I Once Was” invites those in the pro sports world to share their own transformational stories, describing the very moment that changed their lives forever.
